This is the best Pastry Recipe I have ever tried, and I am pretty sure you will love it too! It is so buttery and flaky that just thinking about it makes my mouth water. When making it, be sure to follow the directions carefully, leaving visible butter chunks, so your pastry turns out delightfully flaky instead of heavy.

The Snoogle pastry is a delightful treat created by chance at Kiedrowski’s Simply Delicious Bakery. The bakers, Tim and Terri, had some leftover ingredients while making other pastries, so they decided to get creative. They mixed a bit of this and a bit of that; they came up with the Snoogle.  These sweet, cream-filled pastries became very popular and top-sellers at the bakery. In 2011, they even got a trademark for the Snoogle.

It is important to know that only Kiedrowski’s can use the name Snoogle for their pastries. They make sure to use high-quality ingredients to ensure each one is delicious. So, if you come across a pastry that looks like a Snoogle, always ask if it is from Kiedrowski’s. If not, it is not the original, and you might be missing out on a true culinary delight.

The story behind the recipe

The Snoogle pastry is a delightful creation born in the kitchen of Kiedrowski’s Simply Delicious Bakery in Amherst, Ohio, USA. The masterminds behind this delectable treat are the bakery’s owners, Tim and Terri Kiedrowski. But, believe it or not, Snoogle’s creation was a wonderful accident.

One evening, Tim was busy making ladylocks, a classic Eastern European pastry, while Terri was whipping up some cheese Danish. They found themselves with some leftover ingredients, and instead of letting them go to waste, they decided to have a little culinary adventure. Mixing a bit of this and a pinch of that, they ended up creating something brand new – the Snoogle pastry.

This pastry was an instant hit with the bakery’s customers and soon became one of their best-selling treats. Tim and Terri’s commitment to using top-notch ingredients and their dedication to quality ensured that every Snoogle was simply delicious. The Snoogle was so unique that in April 2011, it was awarded a trademark, officially making it one of a kind.

How to make Snoogle pastry

Ingredients

For the preparation of pastry dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cold butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup cold water

For the preparation of cream filling

  • 1 cup cream cheese
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Step-by-step instructions for making Snoogle pastry:

  1. Let’s start by making the pastry dough. Get a big bowl and mix the flour and some salt. Then, add the cold butter pieces. You can use a special tool called a pastry cutter or just use your fingers to mix it all up until it looks like coarse crumbs.
  2. Next, add cold water slowly and knead the dough until it comes together. Shape the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and put it in the fridge for about 30 minutes to chill.
  3. While the dough is cooling, we will make the sweet cream filling. Take another bowl and use a beater to mix up the cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract until it’s nice and smooth. Then, add the eggs one by one, mixing well each time.
  4. Now, heat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and get a baking sheet with some parchment paper ready.
  5. Take the chilled dough and roll it out on a floured surface until it’s pretty thin, about 1/8 inch thick. Cut it into small rectangles or squares.
  6. Put a spoonful of that sweet cream filling onto each piece of pastry and fold it over to make a triangle or rectangle. Use a fork to press the edges and seal it up.
  7. Pop the Snoogles into the oven you preheated for about 20-25 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and the filling sets.
  8. Let them cool a bit before you dig in. And if you like, you can sprinkle some powdered sugar on top for an extra hint of sweetness.

Tips for making Snoogle pastry

  • Cold Stuff: Make sure your butter and water are really cold when you’re making the dough. Cold things help make the pastry nice and flaky.
  • Don’t Overstuff: Be careful not to put too much of the cream mixture inside the pastries. If you do, they might leak while baking. Try to use the same amount for each one.
  • Gentle with the Dough: When you’re mixing the pastry dough, don’t mix it too much. Mixing too much can make the dough tough instead of flaky. Just mix until everything comes together.

Flavourful substitute

  • Sugar: you can use brown sugar instead of white sugar.
  • Vanilla extract: instead of vanilla extract, you can use almond extract.
  • All–purpose flour: If you like healthier pastries, you can use whole wheat flour or other flour like almond or gluten-free instead of some of the all-purpose flour.

Serving suggestions

  • Coffee or Tea: Enjoy them as a delightful treat with a cup of coffee or tea.
  • Ice Cream: Serve Snoogles alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delightful dessert.
  • Fresh Berries: Add a handful of fresh berries like strawberries or blueberries for a fruity twist.
  • Whipped Cream: Add a spoonful of whipped cream on top to make them extra special and rich.
  • Chocolate Drizzle: Drizzle some melted chocolate over your Snoogles for a chocolatey upgrade.
  • Breakfast Treat: Enjoy them as a sweet breakfast pastry with your morning coffee.
